TTBB a cappella, with a final verse descant
Original poem by Leigh Hunt with extra parody verses in English
Difficulty rating (1-5): 3

The original poem by Leigh Hunt is quite a lovely, quaint poem - but so short. When I came across a poem parody book which included good-natured parodies of this poem, I knew I had to create a sweet, but also slyly silly piece for male voices. This piece is dedicated to my good pal Reg Unterseher, quite a character and also quite a composer and singer. Reg and I first met at the 2002 Oxford Summer Institutes and we hit it off immediately.

TEXT

Jenny kiss’d me when we met,
Jumping from the chair she sat in;
Time, you thief, who love to get
Sweets into your list, put that in!
Say I’m weary, say I’m sad,
Say that health and wealth have missed me,
Say I’m growing old , but add,
Jenny kiss’d me.
Jenny kiss’d me in a dream;
So did Elsie, Lucy, Cora,
Bessie, Gwendolyn, Eupheme,
Alice, Adelaide, and Dora.

Say of honour I’m devoid,
Say monogamy has missed me,
But don’t say to Doctor Freud
Jenny kiss’d me.
Jenny kiss’d me when we met,
Jumping from the chair she sat in;
Knocked me down to the floor with her
Exuberance and passion.
Say I’m weary, say I’m sad,
Say that health and wealth have missed me,
Say my chiropractor’s glad that
Jenny kiss’d me.
