This text is a
real 19thcentury
romantic
creation,
so I’ve set it
in a wonderfully lush
manner. By the
way, O'Reilly's
life was full of
high action --a
globetrotting
story of
improbable
adventures!
This piece was
dedicated to and
premiered by
Sigrid Johnson
at St. Olaf
College. The
piece was part of the repertoire for the Colorado
All-State Women's Choir in 2006-2007, directed by Lynne Gackle &
has also been featured at other treble music festivals in Iowa,Minnesota, Nebraska, and Virginia.
From Walton Music's Website:
"Beautifully written for high school women's voices, Paul Carey's romantic, lyrical setting
of John Boyle O'Reilly's restrained yet passionate poem would be ideal for any concert or festival.
Sustained vocal passages are mirrored by expressive legato lines in the violin part, all supported by a tasteful piano accompaniment. Simply elegant!"
What others say: "I
conduct the Bel Canto Children's Chorus in SE PA. We have sung a number of your pieces over the years, but recently I picked up "TheWhite Rose"
to check out. I have to tell you that I think it is simply a stunning piece. The text is exquisite, and the setting just gorgeous. I plan to have my senior high
girls chamber chorus perform it in the spring. Thank you for writing this absolutely beautiful piece!"
