Traditional French Carol in
English
Duration: 3 fun-filled minutes
Difficulty level (1-5): 2
I put a twist on this sprightly traditional
carol by setting it mostly in 7/8. There is a slow middle
section with block chords which imply churchbell
overtones. The harp version was premiered Dec. 1, 2007 in
Wisconsin with the Festival Choir of Madison, directed by
Drew Collins. The brass version premiered Dec. 7, 2007 by
The Nebraska Choral Arts Society (Omaha, NE) directed by
Matt Harden.
TEXT
Ding dong! merrily on high in heav'n the
bells are ringing:
Ding dong! verily the sky is riv'n with
Angel singing.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
E'en so here below, below, let steeple bells
be swungen,
And "Io, io, io!" by priest and people
sungen.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Pray you, dutifully prime your Matin chime, ye
ringers;
May you beautifully rime your Evetime Song, ye
singers.
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
Gloria, Hosanna in excelsis!
